    Functional Clothing Layers

We recommend using 3 Layers model for wearing functional clothes: functional-clothing-layers
    1. First-Base-Layer is the most important. It transports moisture from skin to external layers so the body remains dry.
    2. Second-Mid-Layer is designed to be used on top of the base layer garment. The Second-Layer insulates the warmth and will continue the moist transportation from the base layer to the Third-Layer.
    3. Third-Layer transmits air, protects from wind and external dampness.

  • Abstract

"Fabrics are often subject to repeated creasing and bending deformations, such as elbow movements, and the resilience of crease recovery is an important property that affects fabric’s serviceability. In this research, nine types of woven fabrics were examined on an automated crease recovery tester repetitively to investigate the crease recovery behaviors, and possible factors affecting the creasing resilience. Each specimen was pressed and its recovery process was recorded by sequential images, which allowed the recovery angle to be calculated in real-time. This process was repeated 30 times for the same specimen. The parameters, such as initial angular velocity, instant recovery time and angle, stable recovery time and angle, were extracted from the recovery curve of each cycle, and calculate the differences between different cycles to characterize the changes of crease recovery in repeated tests. The experimental results show that the more the circulating test conducts, the earlier the instant and stable recovery time appear. The stable recovery angles decrease rapidly in the first few cycles, fall more slowly when the testing cycle increases, and finally become stable at a cycle near the 25th cycle. Cotton fabrics take fewer cycles to reach steady than wool fabrics. The high elasticity of polyester fibers affects the resilience remarkably."

    The Six Basic Factors

    The Six Basic Factors

"The most commonly used indicator of thermal comfort is air temperature – it is easy to use and most people can relate to it. But although it is an important indicator to take into account, air temperature alone is neither a valid nor an accurate indicator of thermal comfort or thermal stress. Air temperature should always be considered in relation to other environmental and personal factors.
The six factors affecting thermal comfort are both environmental and personal. These factors may be independent of each other, but together contribute to a worker’s thermal comfort."The Six Basic Factors

  • Abstract

"This paper studies the fast-fashion apparel transshipment problem (FATP) among allied retailers. The FATP belongs to the category of practical many–to–many transportation models and has distinct features: the flow out of and the flow into a retailer are restricted by the estimated sales volume in the next time period, the shortage of stock and excess stock for fast-fashion apparel sales all yield penalty costs and the alliance aims to maximize the profit for the retailers as a whole. Therefore, developing an optimal transshipment solution method is important for the alliance. This paper devises mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) models for the FATP. The stock levels, the estimated distribution of sales for the next decision period, the unit penalty costs for a shortage of stock or excess stock and the unit cost of transshipment are parameters that control the flows among retailers. A decision-support system (DSS) was designed based on the model for transshipment management. Experiments were performed to demonstrate the transshipment solutions and reveal the effects of parameters on the solutions for a real-world case. Some tuning methods are designed to assist the decisions of the retailer alliance. The FATP is addressed for fast-fashion apparel sales in the context of an alliance for alleviating the risk of dead stock; the FATP is also a new transportation problem with uncertain supply and demand. The proposed method is a theoretical basis for designing a practical DSS for allied fast-fashion apparel retailers."http://trj.sagepub.com/content/84/20/2127.abstract

    ABSTRACT

"Consumers prefer garments that not only look good but also feel good especially during the last years because of their increased consciousness about a better life. Therefore, there have been many studies about subjective evaluation techniques such as subjective wear trials and consumer research techniques to understand how consumers perceive clothing and formulate their comfort perceptions at any specific moment. In this study, the meaning and importance of clothing comfort and main comfort problems according to a group of Turkish consumers having different properties were determined by a questionnaire survey study. Analysis of the results indicated that, garment fit and comfort were the most important criteria for the investigated group during purchase decisions and nearly all of the respondents considered clothing comfort as more important than before. The basic comfort problems of people were mostly related to ease of movement, sweating and garment fit. This study is a preparation stage for wear trials that will constitute the subjective part of a comfort evaluation method to be developed." ...more

Perceptions of temperature, moisture and comfort in clothing during environmental transients. Li Y.

    Abstract

A study has been carried out to investigate the psychophysical mechanisms of the perception of temperature and moisture sensations in clothing during environmental transients. A series of wear trials was conducted to measure the psychological perception of thermal and moisture sensations and the simultaneous temperature and humidity at the skin surface, fabric surface and in the clothing under simulated moderate rain conditions. Jumpers made from wool and acrylic fibres were used in the trial. Analysis has been carried out to study the relationship between psychological perceptions of temperature and moisture and the objectively measured skin and fabric temperatures and relative humidity in clothing microclimate. The perception of warmth seems to follow Fechner's law and Stevens' power law, having positive relationships with the skin temperature and fabric temperatures. The perception of dampness appears to follow Fechner's law more closely than Stevens' power law with a negative relationship with skin temperature, and is nonlinearly and positively correlated with relative humidity in clothing microclimate. The perception of comfort is positively related to the perception of warmth and negatively to the perception of dampness. This perception of comfort is positively related to the skin temperature, which appears to follow both Fechner's law and Stevens' law, also non-linearly and negatively related to relative humidity in clothing microclimate.

    DEFINING COMFORT

FR Protection you want to wear

Flame-resistant clothing has evolved over several decades. For years, safety and maintenance managers had limited choices for FR daily wear to protect their employees. The leading problem with legacy FR garments is comfort. Historically, FR clothing is heavy weight, limited in its ability to breathe, and lacked the ability to manage sweat.
There is a new choice in the revolution of FR Protection and Comfort...

by Prof. Tanveer Malik and Prof T.K.Sinha, Department of Textile Technology, Shri Vaishnav Institute of Technology and Science.

Abstract: The basic requirement of clothing is that it must not cause discomfort for the wearer. Modern consumers are interested in clothing that not only looks good, but also feel good. It has been identified, by both natural and synthetic fiber markers, that con- sumers are increasingly involving more than their visual sense and are allowing touch, smell, intuition and emotion to influence their decisions. As a result, greater importance being attributed to the shopping and wearing experience interest is growing in better feel- ing fabrics. Comfort is being reinforced a key parameter in clothing. Good health is treasure. The textiles are making human life, a natural healthy life and making them comfortable.
Comfort has been identified by major fiber marketers as one of the key attributes for consumer’s desirability on apparel products in all markets. Comfort as a pleasant state of physiological, psychological and physical harmony between a human being and the envi- ronment. Physiological comfort is related to the human body’s ability to maintain life, psychological comfort to the mind’s ability to keep it functioning satisfactorily with external help and physical comfort to the effect of the external environment on the body. more...

Cotton Clothing Comfort Compared To Polyester By : Mahfuzer Rahman Maruf

Cotton Clothing Comfort Compared To Polyester By :   Mahfuzer Rahman Maruf
In summer season polyester made garments are not comfortable to the wearer in absence of any softener in fabric, this happens only for the tropical countries like Bangladesh. We have seen that in hot weather polyester made garments wearer doesn't feel comfortable. Besides cotton made garments gives more comfort in the same aspect to the wearer in hot condition. Due to a novel comfort characteristics Cotton today is the most used textile fiber in the world. It has terrific soft hand feel, good moisture absorbency & good moisture vapor transmission. On the other hand polyester is used for different blended fabric & home furnishing materials for its hydrophobic nature and better durability. The main aim of this article is to find out the possible reason of variation of comfort between the cotton garments and polyester garments in the tropical countries. In this paper the comfort of cotton & polyester fibers are demonstrated with respect to their dominating properties, which are affected by some important factors. Some physiological interaction with skin and garments are also taken under consideration with a technical approach in this paper. more

Moisture from perspiration collects in and passes through clothing as worn, and the properties of clothing fabrics influence both the collection and passage of this moisture. The selection and measure of moisture properties that relate to comfort in wear has proved to be more difficult than first perceived. Dynamic surface wetness of fabrics has been found to correlate with skin contact comfort in wear for a variety of fabric types, suggesting that mobility of thin films of condensed moisture is an important element of wearing comfort. This paper discusses how dynamic surface wetness is measured and calibrated against color standards used in the measurement. ..more
